The Crucible is one of my favorite books. "Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!" In a way, John Proctor's name was the only thing he had left of himself. He had already lost everything. He had already confessed to being a sinner for committing adultery, but could not bare the idea of his name standing for a lie and to feed into the corruption of Salem's court. He could not walk free knowing that others have died at the cost of lies and deception: "Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang". I've also watched documentaries about the West Memphis Three before and the parallels between that case and the Salam witch trials are apparent. Both communities preyed on vulnerable targets to be convicted for crimes they did not commit based on extraneous details such as their appearances and their ages. The state should have been held accountable for the injustice done to these boys. If confessing to a crime that I did not commit would get me out of prison, it's hard to say what decision I would make. I don't blame them for wanting to be set free after being imprisoned for a crime that they did not commit, but only under the condition of signing to a lie? I don't think I could live with myself before I knew that justice was served for myself and everyone else before me who suffered in the face of a corrupted justice system.
My boyfriend always tells me to watch what I say and to stop speaking so negative because then that is what you will manifest. I've always been interested in the Salem Witch Trials and the Crucible. I also have read Devil's Knot and have looked into the West Memphis Three and the story is extremely crazy and frightening.
"Religion gives people who want to do evil the justification for what they do." What an incredible quote that I think everyone should take a moment to reflect on! The fact that Johnny Depp took a personal interest in the West Memphis Three case and knows it inside and out is incredible. The way that the rumors concerning the deaths of the children spiraled into claims of Satanism is very similar to witch hunts we have learned about in this class. People spread preposterous rumors, they lied about things they heard from the three suspects, and the three accused teens were charged for the crimes despite their knowledge contradicting the facts police knew about the crime. There were lost DNA samples, evidence and statements that didn't match up, and even a witness who said he was an expert on the occult who claimed that the crime took place at an occult service despite there being no evidence of such. This case was riddled with holes from the beginning!
