Good-Bye, Holly King

The Holly and the Ivy

Holly: Winter/Darkness/Stillness

Magical Properties: Protection, luck, dreams, balance, success

Ruling planets – Mars, Saturn

Element – Fire

Gender Energy– Masculine

In NeoPagan lore, the Holly King rules the dark half of the year, from the Autumnal Equinox on September 20, to the Vernal (Spring) Equinox, six months later on March 20.

His counterpart and adversary, The Oak King, rules the light half of the year and is the Holly King's energetic inverse.

Interestingly, it is the red holly berry which is symbolic of the life- giving blood of the Goddess in the Mystery Traditions. We can also see this dynamic played out in the Persephone mythology of Ancient Greece.

  • Take three red berries from the Holly Tree and throw them into the water of an ocean, river, or pond,  giving thanks and making a request to manifest a cherished wish.

Ivy

Spring/Rebirth/Light

Ivy is a symbol of the Goddess, and as such, it represents the Spirals of Life.  The Goddess is the animated, energetic flow of Mother Earth, or in other words, the material plane.  She manifests the fecund Springtime over the still, cold time of Darkness.

Magical Properties: Protection, healing, binding, love, abundance, fidelity

Ruling planets – Saturn, Moon

Sign - Scorpio

Element – Water

Gender Energy – Feminine

  • Ivy creeps and binds as it grows, making it ideal to incorporate into binding spells.

  • Make an ivy wreath to place in your home to:

  1.     attract love and abundance, and
  2.     keep negative energy out.

  1. I have a ton of Ivy growing in my backyard. I'm totally going to make an Ivy wreath! Also I really like the three red holly berry wish ritual. (:

  2. I have Ivy growing in my backyard as well. I love that it is a symbol for Spring as well as rebirth and light. I hope this season is better than the past winter we had. -Julia Drazin

  3. My mom used to make/buys ivy wreaths every season and i never really knew why now I do! ! I love learning all these new aspects. I had no idea that me and ivy shared so much energy such as the Scorpio sign / water element. Its just so cool to have a different perspective of things and see these "plants" for what they actually are and how they are so much more than just plants !

  4. I do not have any ivy in my yard that I know of, but I might need to get my hands on some to make an ivy wreath if there's a chance it will ward off negative energies!
